District of Columbia (DC) Drug and Alcohol Rehab

Scope of Problem

In a cruel irony, our nation’s capital has become a breeding ground for the abuse and distribution of illegal drugs and corresponding criminal culture. Washington DC is regarded by experts to be a leading region in substance abuse and addiction. The DC illegal drug market offers every conceivable illicit substance in abundance. The need for DC drug and alcohol rehab has remained consistent for the past thirty years, and has infiltrated every portion of the city’s population, even affecting some of its former elected officials. Crack and powder cocaine have been the dominant causes of DC drug and alcohol rehab admissions, with heroin and ecstasy also greatly contributing to the problem. The younger population of DC is at a higher-than-ever risk of succumbing to substance abuse and illegal drug addiction. Combine this with the alarming drug-related homicide rate, and it’s clear that more DC drug and alcohol rehab centers are needed. It’s been estimated that over 10 percent of the city’s population is seriously dependent on an illicit substance of some kind, resulting in a higher treatment-related cost per capita than other state in the country.

DC Drug Rehab

The innumerable illegal drug threats facing DC, as well as the violent criminal activity they’ve precipitated, has given birth to a spike in DC drug rehab facilities. With existent problems such as cocaine and heroin still prevalent and ecstasy and methamphetamine starting to make a stronger showing, staff at these facilities have had to significantly step up their efforts in order to make a dent. Though substance abuse and addiction are still major problems for the city, DC drug rehab centers are adjusting their methodologies and practices every day in an effort to keep pace.

DC Alcohol Rehab

Home of the “power-lunch” as well as a thriving university culture in Georgetown and other institutions, alcoholism is a tragically common problem in DC. DC alcohol rehab patients know no singular identity, and span the city’s social and cultural spectrum. DC is home to a number of alcohol rehab facilities with quality staff and high success-rates. They will help you address the roots of your alcohol dependency and provide post-treatment coping methods to help you avoid relapse. Any quality DC alcohol rehab facility knows that rehab is only a temporary process, and will equip patients with the tools to resist temptation in situations where alcohol is present.

DC Detox

The first step to recovery from any addiction problem is the elimination of the toxins in your body that have gathered through substance abuse. There are many DC detox programs that effectively allow you to attack your recovery with a clean bill of health and a clear head. Be sure to enlist the help of friend or loved one when researching your detox options, as the wrong choice can have serious negative consequences on your rehab and recovery efforts. Any quality facility will place patient comfort and withdrawal symptom management at the top of their list of priorities to better enable the patient to successfully complete their program.

DC Marijuana Abuse

DC marijuana abuse is one of the most common illegal drug problems in the city. Coming predominantly from the south through places like Texas, Arizona, Mexico and Southern California, DC’s marijuana supply is controlled mainly by violent criminal groups. There is also a rapidly proliferating domestic cultivation problem. Though legislation was recently implemented to crack down on both foreign and domestic DC marijuana distributors, the unabashed abuse of the popular drug remains common among almost every portion of the city’s population.

DC Cocaine Addiction

Cocaine addiction is undeniably the most immediate and dangerous drug problem facing DC's residents. It has led to the deterioration of neighborhoods, widespread violence, and gangland activity. The city’s cocaine supply is mainly acquired through Colombia, and is usually converted into crack upon its arrival. African-American and Hispanic crews control the local trade through violent territorialism. Approximately three quarters of all federal drug sentences in DC are crack-related. Despite dramatic efforts from local and federal law enforcement, crack and powdered cocaine continue to be the biggest drug problem in the region.

DC Heroin Addiction

South American heroin is a common illegal drug threat in DC, and is responsible for the bulk of local heroin addiction. One of the most alarming components of this widespread problem is the increasingly younger population it now threatens. Teenagers and young adults from all over the tri-state area (Virginia, Maryland and DC) are purchasing higher-purity product to snort. The two dominant suppliers are Colombian and Dominican drug trafficking organizations (DTOs). Southeast Asian heroin and Mexican Black tar are also starting to infiltrate DC’s illegal drug market.

DC Methamphetamine Addiction

Though not as large a threat as other illegal drugs, methamphetamine is readily available in DC. Seizures from local law enforcement tend to include relatively small amounts, which are most likely purchased from the surrounding states. The limited supply of DC methamphetamine is mainly controlled by Mexican criminal groups. There are, however, independent dealers (many of whom are teenagers and young adults) that distribute methamphetamine at nightclubs and on college campuses along with other club drugs. Methamphetamine addiction is responsible for a small, but growing number of local rehab admissions.

DC Prescription Drug Addiction

Some of the more common prescription drugs recreationally abused in DC include Oxycontin, Buprenorphine, methadone and Xanax. Theft, improper use of an existing prescription, dishonest or incompetent physician practices, and unregulated Internet sales are the dominant causes of prescription drug addiction, and have forced many patients to seek residential treatment. Recreational prescription abuse in DC has led to a rash of pharmacy robberies and person-to-person theft. This problem knows no singular profile, and has affected every portion of the state’s population.

DC Club Drug Addiction

The term club drug is used to refer to the family of illegal drugs consisting MDMA (molly), PCP, Ketamine, LSD and GHB. Once confined to the city’s nightclub and rave culture, club drugs have managed to infiltrate college campuses, as well as the lives of many young professionals. Local controllers tend to be independent dealers with ties to the DC’s bar and nightclub scene. The scope of abusers has recently expanded to include teenagers, young adults and even adolescents. Ecstasy continues to not only be the most popular club drug, but also one of the most popular illegal drugs in DC, overall.

An ages-old crack cocaine epidemic that has claimed the lives of countless residents combined with emerging and immediate new illegal drug threats has forced DC to heighten enforcement and treatment efforts. The criminality and gangland culture DC’s illicit substance culture has bred mandates a modern and comprehensive approach to drug and alcohol rehab. Although laws are crafted and important decisions are made every day in DC, institutional efforts have thus far been ineffective in the eradication of the city’s illegal drugs.
